The BBC presenter had to barricade herself inside a frozen cabin as temperatures plunged to minus 52C and the drunken natives’ tempers reached boiling point.

As the mob tried to force their way into the cabin, Kate and her crew could only rely on a bunk bed and their kit propped against a door to keep the mob at bay.Kate’s chilling experience underlines her reputation as a tough and resolute television presenter as she shares the hardships of nomadic people in some of the harshest landscapes on the planet.

In one tense scene, Kate helps to break up a fight between a nomad elder of the Raute people and an angry Nepalese villager driven to despair when they chop down his precious trees to make a camp.

The elder later sits next to her and says: “I heard you cried for us, for me. You must love us very much. You are very dear to us, too.”The incident had brought Kate to tears as she sees the despair of hunter-gatherers finding life increasingly fraught in a rapidly changing world.
